A doctor who specializes in treating women with cancers of the reproductive tract is known as a gynecologic oncologist. Following their initial training as obstetricians/gynaecologists, gynecologic oncologists receive three to potentially five years of specialized education in the biology and pathology of gynecologic cancers, as well as all effective forms of treatment, including radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, and experimental treatments. If your doctor recommended that you see a gynecologic oncologist, it's probably because they think you could have ovarian cancer or another type of gynecologic cancer and want you to receive the best possible care. Together, you and your gynecologic oncologist will create a treatment plan, and he or she will explain what to expect next.
